renew 2024: agendas and logistic notes

In May 2024, over 200 sex workers and allies from across South Asia gathered in Kathmandu, Nepal, for CREA’s renew: South Asia Sex Workers’ Summit 2024.

It was a space filled with strength, solidarity, and fierce hope. Together, they celebrated their journeys and launched the Kathmandu Declaration—a powerful call for dignity, rights, and recognition for sex workers everywhere.

As opposition to the recognition and decriminalization of sex work grows, so does our resolve to ensure that the voices of sex workers are heard. On this International Sex Workers Day, we bring you a four-part reel series, where sex workers’ rights advocates spotlight the lived experiences, realities, and resilience of sex workers.

Understanding and practicing feminist allyship means striving for equal voice, representation, and power for all members involved.

In 2021, CREA embarked on an in-depth case study to explore the principles and practices of feminist allyship, drawing from its nearly 20-year relationship with sex worker organizations in South Asia and globally. This study aimed to identify what makes alliances truly feminist and how to build and sustain them effectively.

Key principles of feminist allyship include building a shared long-term vision and agenda for change, standing together visibly and vocally—especially in times of crisis, enhancing access, visibility, and voice for all members in key spaces, practicing transparency and mutual accountability, and building each other’s knowledge, capacity, and leadership.

These principles, derived from CREA's experiences, provide a foundation for fostering robust feminist alliances that can navigate power dynamics and sustain collaborative efforts for social justice.
